In the winter of 2014 I was approached by the Luxembourg based transadlibit percussion duo regarding a commission for a piece to perform on an upcoming concert.  The duo was looking for an exciting and energetic piece that showcased the virtuosic strengths of the ensemble.  An accomplished orchestral percussionist, transadlibit member Chris Hastings also has a strong rudimental percussion background performing as a snare drummer for the Kiwanis Kavaliers drum and bugle corps from 1999-2002.  Also an accomplished orchestral percussionist, transadlibit member Mich Mootz is also an accomplished drum set player.  It only seemed fitting that the piece be written for snare drum (rudimental and concert) and drumset.

The title is derived from the rhythmic, dance-like nature of the piece.  The rhythmic structure is not in any way influenced by a traditional lambada, but I was more drawn to the alliteration of the title and felt I needed to somehow showcase the duos roots in this small, historically rich country.

The Luxembourg Lambada was premiered on June 27, 2015 at the Kinneksbond Centre Culturel Mamer.  The piece was performed as the closing piece on the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg’s “Voyage Oriental” concert.
